Annual Reports
Annual Operational Report - F.Y. 2004
FY 2004 has been our busiest and most expensive year yet conducted at Waterfall Springs.
We have focused on construction of habitats, infrastructure development and animal recruitment.
Our Application to form a Foundation to provide for tax deductibility on cash donations is now months in the making ---- and could still be months from being approved The final draft is about to be sent to the Dept of Fair Trading .The delay in this process has forced our Association to take out significant loans (secured by Redranger) to bridge the funding gap as we await receipt of funds generously committed by our sponsors. Until such time as our Foundation is registered, our Association cannot accept these intended donations, in a tax-deductible manner.
On behalf of our registered organisation, Waterfall Springs Conservation Association Inc, I would like to sincerely thank all our generous sponsors for the valuable contributions.
From time to time Debbie will forward you a very brief summary of the progress of our Endangered Species Breeding program, which has been made possible through you support.
Commencement of Rock-wallaby facilities commenced in 2001, and has continued through till the present time. We are at last pleased to advise, that all planned major construction is now complete although we have around a years work to complete fencing and landscaping.
We have constructed an additional 13 separate rock wallaby habitats, most are basically large earthen mounds with concrete culvert incorporated to form numerous tunnels, dens and caves. Quarried rock is then placed on selected aspects of the earthen mound to create escarpments.
These facilities will provide excellent habitats for the Endangered Rock Wallaby breeding programs we have undertaken.
To recruit valuable breeding stock, we conducted 3 separate, 4 week, trapping missions on Kawau Island New Zealand to Rescue and Repatriate the Endangered Brush-tailed Rock-wallabies that were taken to the island 100 years ago.
As expected, this was a very difficult, lengthy and expensive campaign .By May 2004 we imported 33 wallabies, the total cost of the exercise including construction of Quarantine facilities and habitats for the animals was $ 210,000.
Waterfall Springs is now home to 4 Endangered species of wallaby. With the commencement of managed breeding programs under the direction of the various state government Recovery Programs, it became necessary to enlist the services of an experienced wildlife Keeper. In June, Debbie Breen was appointed as Sanctuary Manager and has now enlisted the services of an experienced group of Permanent Volunteer Keepers to assist with the animal husbandry requirements.
