A PRIVATELY owned animal sanctuary in Kulnura has leapt on to the national stage by winning the Wildlife Preservation Society of Australia's conservation award.

The Waterfall Springs Conservation Association at Kulnura has been given the award for its work with four species of endangered wallaby.

Sanctuary manager Debbie Breen said Waterfall Springs was honoured to be recognised for its hard work.

"This is like winning an Academy Award for us," Ms Breen said. "I think it is a real boost for the Central Coast to know they have a community-based project like this."

One of the park's treasured animals at present is 15-month-old Aussie, the first Australian-born Kawau Island brush-tailed rock wallaby.

This New Zealand species of rock wallaby has been introduced to Australia and the park has about 25 animals.

Aussie has been hand-raised since birth but usually stays in his network of rock caves during the day. But Ms Breen was able to lure Aussie out for a quick photo using one of his favourite treats -- peanuts.

Waterfall Springs was nominated for the national award for its work with the bridled nail-tail wallaby.

It is also in recognition of breeding programs involving the yellow-footed rock wallaby and palmer rock wallaby.
